Disneyland! And Reading Limitations

I’m so unmotivated to get up and going this morning. I wish normal working hours were 10-3 each day. Who came up with this 8-5 deal? They were stupid. So instead of brushing my hair, I thought I should share a few picture from this weekend. Disneyland!

We started the day at California Adventure and the first ride we went on broke down as soon as we got seated. I’m talking locked-in-the-seat-can’t-get-up broken down. After some minor anxiety and 20 minutes later, they moved us into a different part to go on the ride. Then we lined up in the 100 degree (almost) heat to go on the rollercoaster. After that, the boys decided we needed to properly hydrate for the rest of the day.

Once we were properly filled with some beverages and lobster nachos (mmmmm) we made our way on to the stomach dropping Tower of Terror.

We thought it would be a good idea to get a slight cool down on Splash Mountain, but somehow I got soaked and walked around with wet jeans the rest of the day. At least I didn’t wear tennis shoes and have one squishy wet sock all day (J…)

So to make up for the fact that we got drenched and it was now dark out, we needed some goodies:

Unfortunately there is no picture of the tiger butter fudge or the two Dole Pineapple Whips we scarfed down. But the cookie was awesome. And J was super amused that he matched the Coke bottle.

Then I contemplated a $40 Indiana Jones hat, but thought better of it. I need new running clothes more I guess.

And finally, I made them watch the fireworks. They did what boys do best and checked ESPN while me and my non-smart phone stood there taking creepy pictures of them. 

After the fireworks, we left the park, stopped at Jack In The Box where I had my first piece of fast food (In N Out doesn’t count!) in months, then went home. 

On Sunday, J and I got up to hit the beach for a bit since it was unbearably hot again. We watched this helicopter take off and I got nauseous just watching them fly all around. Ugh, no thanks…

And we couldn’t leave the beach without stopping at Lady Face:

And finally we went home and sat outside so I could blast through 11 chapters of The Hunger Games in record time. Then I read more yesterday. I’m not having to put a limit on when I can read it because Jas is reading it too and he’s about 12 chapters behind me so I can’t discuss anything with him! It’s driving me nuts! Read faster boyfriend!

And I was lazy and didn’t run all weekend but I hit the gym yesterday and did 40 min elliptical and I’m going all out tonight on the treadmill. Now I need to get ready for work I guess. I should at least not show up in pajamas… 

What is your favorite ride at Disneyland? And is anyone else reading Hunger Games and want to have long drawn out discussions about how much we love it so I don’t drive J crazy?

Morning Runs and What I’m Doing Tonight

This morning started out with a very early 4.5 miles with my dad at 5:30. We did it in 47 minutes and I didn’t get a single side cramp. I think I’ve finally knocked out that problem after reading up on some tips to prevent them. Then I got home and actually put some effort in to getting ready (I blow dried my hair even!) because J and I are off to see these guys tonight:

They’ve been opening for Taylor Swift on her tour but thankfully J scored some tickets to their secret show in Hollywood for about what it would have cost us to park at Staples Center.

Tomorrow morning I’m up bright and early for another 4.5er then we’re off to Disneyland for FREE! Thank you friends who work for the Mouse.

Feed Me Something GOOD

There are so many things I have learned about since I started running. Many of these things I’ve learned from other running bloggers, RunnersWorld.com, and some from my own trial-and-error experiences.

One of the biggest reality checks I’ve had is realizing that my performance is completely related to what I eat. Not just physically, but mentally as well. I notice that it’s so much harder to push myself and work to my full potential when my head is going “This run would be so  much easier if I hadn’t had those cookies/that second beer/the gigantic cheeseburger and fries.” My body feels it as well. I definitely can tell that I feel much more sluggish and it’s so much hard to get going and push myself when I’m running off of sugar and empty carbs.

My best runs have come on days that I fueled myself properly throughout the day (for evening runs) or made smart choices the day before (for morning runs – still a struggle!).

I talked about my whole FAUXleo idea in a previous post, but it’s SO hard to limit myself to certain types of food while still living at home. And I just can’t survive without sandwiches. I’ve been working really hard at listening to my body and trying to figure out what works for me throughout the day and I really think it’s been successful. I’m eating healthier whole foods, staying away from processed junk foods as much as possible.

I think one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned was also a big shock. You might want to be sitting down for this one…

Low-Fat, Fat-Free, Reduced-Fat, Diet, 0 Calorie, Low Calorie and Reduced Calorie DOES NOT MEAN HEALTHY.

I wish I had that little piece of information when I was in college buying Diet and Low-Fat/No-Fat everything. The fat in these food items is usually replaced with tons more sugar, and the calories are usually cut with chemicals and artificial sweeteners. I’m not about to start preaching about how bad this is for us, because I still choose diet soda over regular 99% of the time (but my soda consumption is rare), and I’m not a scientist so I know nothing about what these things do to our bodies and I never know which side to believe – the “It’s going to cause cancer” side or the “It will make you gain weight” side or the “It’s still OK to eat” side. I really don’t care to worry about all that.

My problem with these foods is that they lack the things I need to really keep going. I could eat an entire can of Pringles, follow it up with a couple Milky Ways, and top that all off with some Oreos – and still be hungry in 30 minutes! No bueno for my insides or my jeans. 

I’ve found that just being more conscious of what I’m eating and when I eat it has really improved my athletic abilities. I tore it up on the treadmill for 2 miles yesterday, hit the stairmaster for a mile at level 10-12, then back on the treadmill for another mile and I felt great. I think this has to do with the fact that my diet for the past couple weeks has been whole wheat toast when I leave for work in the morning followed by a bagel thin with peanut butter and banana around 10. Then I usually have a granola bar at 11, lunch is a turkey and spinach wrap on a whole wheat tortilla, then finally a small bowl of whole grain cereal at 3:30 so I have energy for the gym. I usually snack on fruit like apples or oranges or melon sometime in the morning and afternoon. I’m constantly eating, but I’m eating the right things. I really am noticing a difference. I am starting to actually crave these good-for-me foods and I love it. That’s not to say I don’t reach into the Skittles jar everyone once in a while at work, but these small changes are definitely making a difference in how I feel on my runs.

Tonight my mom made a healthy dinner of orzo salad and teriyaki marinated tofu so I got to indulge in a Yogurtland treat after dinner. Tomorrow I’ll be up at the crack of dawn to run 4.5 miles with my dad, and then Jboo and I are off to see NeedToBreathe in Hollywood. Seriously check these guys out if you like Kings of Leon meets Lifehouse with a little folksiness to it.

Want Wednesday: Fall (Running) Fashion

Fall is coming and I couldn’t be more excited! I LOVE Fall. I think it has something to do with my birthday being in November, my love of Halloween, the Christmas goodies that enter every store late September… I just love it all! 

Living in SoCal obviously has its perks, but for someone who loves Fall as much as I do, dealing with 80+ weather well into November is not exactly a perk. I get SO SAD when all the amazing boots, sweaters, scarves and coats start piling into my favorite stores because I know I won’t be able to fully enjoy them until around January. But one thing I think I will get to enjoy will be some great new cold weather running apparel.

Even though the weather stays pretty warm, where I live we get some CRAZY wind starting around September and October. Once when I was in high school, the swing set in our backyard blew over on top of the fence. My dad had to hold it with a rope until the fire department could come and keep it from toppling down the hill. We’ve had our garage dented by wind, trees, ripped out of the ground, and driving on the freeway is an adventure and I thank my lucky stars I’ve always stuck to low profile vehicles.

I am really looking forward to investing in a couple key pieces that I will need to keep out the chill on my morning runs that I hope to get more into doing. Some of my favorites are:

2. New Balance Colorblocked Tempo Long Sleeve – $30

3. New Balance Sequence Running Jacket 2.0 – $50

 

I’m definitely about to get on a major New Balance kick. My NB shorts are my favorite of all my running shorts (followed by the Nike Heros, then the Nike Tempos). NB just came out with a TON of new, and super cute and comfy, running clothes at Sports Authority and I’m patiently awaiting my next coupon for 25% 🙂 Until then, my bank account and I will just have to wait until my favorite time of year – Fall + Birthday + Gift Cards = New Running Clothes.

And if I happen to wake up one day and realize I miraculously have $178 to spend on a cute jacket, I would totally add this to my WW list.

What are you favorite running clothes? I’m in serious need of comfy, well-fitting tops if anyone has advice on those.

Daniel Tosh – I want to steal your puppies

On Sunday, I was here:

And it was amazing.If I didn’t love Daniel Tosh enough already, my adoration increased by about 9867% when he came out with two puppies. PUPPIES! If there is anything I love more than inappropriate, line-crossing comedies – it’s puppies.

It was SUCH a fun show! We met up with a group of friends before at a restaurant across from the Honda Center and then headed over to the show after.

We saw four other comedians who opened the show who were all pretty fun, but Tosh was hilarious.   Being the great girlfriend that I am, I got these tickets last month for J’s birthday so we’ve been looking forward to this for weeks, and it did not disappoint. It also made us aware of two things:

1. We should go to more comedy shows. It’s so fun to just sit there and laugh hysterically for a couple hours.

2. OC > LA. Between parking, walking, the feeling of actual safety, driving, pedestrian traffic, ease of getting to the freeway after the show… it made me love OC even more. And we weren’t even in Irvine or Newport like we were last week! Just driving through Anaheim and past Angel Stadium was a real eye-opener in comparison to driving near Dodger Stadium and the traffic and general confusion that comes with that. We need to spend more time around Orange County because I was way less stressed behind the wheel.

We wrapped up our fun weekend by taking yesterday off of work so we could enjoy the nice weather. I ran 4 miles, then we went on a 2 mile hike before completely destroying all our effort with a lunch of In N Out and Yogurtland (OK the yogurt was just me…) Then we topped off the night by watching 5 episodes of Weeds, and blasting The Cab‘s new album SymphonySoldier. If you haven’t heard of the, you will. Best album I’ve heard in a LOOOOONG time. Check them out!!

Saturday Morning Catch-Up

I set my alarm for 7am so I could do 4 miles before a day of wine tasting with a group of girlfriends, but then I woke up and the coffee smelled too good and I decided that blogging about running is just as productive as actually going for a run. Right? Well, I promise to make up for it with 4 miles tomorrow.

Since I’ve been a less-than-consistent blogger this week, I thought I would play a little game of catch-up and let you know my top 10 things of the week:

1. Last Sunday was my Dad’s birthday. We celebrated with some delicious BBQ and of course – BIRTHDAY CAKE. Thankfully, there were enough people to finish most of the cake that night so I wasn’t digging into it all week.

2. On Monday, I ran 4 miles on the treadmill in 42 minutes. That’s the fasted I’ve ever run 4 miles. I usually end up anywhere between 45 – 46 minutes. It was on the treadmill, so it was flat, but it was on the treadmill so it was boring. And would have been so easy to give up and hit that STOP button.

3. On Tuesday, I met up with Megan for mani/pedi’s and a delish dinner of salad and french fries. At least this time we had salad – our last dinner together was mozarella sticks and french fries. And beer. Always.

4. On Tuesday, I also woke up at 5:30am to get in a 3-mile run with my dad so I wouldn’t have to ruin my pedicure with running shoes later that night.

5. I also decided that I really want a the new Brooks PureProject shoes and since I didn’t do a Want Wednesday this week, here it is – Want Saturday. These babies:

6. I want it to be FALLI think Fall is my favorite time of year and right now I’ve become really excited because J and I have a pretty good idea of what we’re going to be for Halloween. We totally have to up the ante on our awesome Legends of the Hidden Temple costumes from last year.

7. I’m going wine tasting today! I know I just mentioned that at the beginning but I’m really excited because I love wine and we’re going to this great place in Malibu where you can bring your own picnic. Wine, fruit, veggies and hummus… sign me up!

8. Last night we went to BJ’s with Jodi and Casey. I had some more delicious beer and we got this great deal they have right now. $20 gets you 2 side salads or soups, one medium pizza and a pizookie. J and I had garden salads and our favorite Buffalo Chicken Pizza. We tried to swap out the Pizookie for the Strawberry Shortcake so it would be less heavy, but no luck. So we had a chocolate chip Pizookie but had to sadly leave most of it behind because we were already stuffed. Also, FAUXleo went out this window much of this week, but my lunches were mostly salads!!

9. My little brother left for college yesterday! It makes me feel SO old knowing he’s in college. He’ll be running Cross Country and I can’t wait to go watch some of the meets. Luckily he’s less than an hour away so we don’t have to miss him too much. He’s also going to my college so I feel especially proud 🙂

10. And finally – the past 2 months of waiting our over! Tomorrow night, J and I will be seeing DANIEL TOSH’S TOSH TOUR ON ICE!! I got J the tickets for his birthday and it’s finally here! We love Tosh.0 so we are so excited to see his stand-up live.

So that’s it for my week and now I need to shower, get ready, go buy food and get cash for today because I do everything last minute.

Did I Really Just Sign Up for That?

Morning runs make me delusional. I managed to get up before the sun and do 2 of my training runs before work this week. For me, this is a HUGE accomplishment as I am the furthest thing from being a morning person. I am the girl who will hit snooze every 5 minutes from 6:00am to 7:15am when I realize I really need to wake up and actually have enough time to change out of my pajamas before work.

Morning runs must have messed up my brain though, because I just bought a Groupon voucher for this:

The Gladiator Rock N Run 5K in Pasadena – October 1, 2011

Am I crazy? Possibly. But I figured, if I can run 3.1 miles through mud, ice water, over walls, in tires, and at some point carry a 40lb bag of rice to the foot of a giant Buddha (???) then I can totally run 13.1 flat, dry, clean miles. Right?

As an added plus, my lovely boyfriend will be joining me on this adventure. I think he got sucked in by the free beer at the finish. If anyone is interested in running this (strange) race, you can buy a VIP pass for $50 on Groupon right now (it’s normally $120 I think).

And because I can’t bear to do any damage to my beloved Brooks Adrenalines… I might have to look for some cheap new shoes for this race. Any suggestions?
